This long stage starts in pleasant parkland, then crosses farmland to enter wilder, remoter country with moorland and massive coniferous forests. The stage can be split after 15 kilometres and accommodation found in the little village of New Luce.

Terrain – Much of the walking is on roads and forest tracks but there are some rough forest rides and moorland paths where care is needed to stay on the route, especially in mist. Off roads the going can be very wet in places.

The magnificent ruins of Dunskey Castle are picturesquely perched on a rocky outcrop jutting out into the Irish Sea.

The massive towerhouse was built in the mid-16th century for the Adairs of Kinhilt – the same family that owned the Castle of St John in Stranraer – and the long wing to the north was added in the 1620’s. By 1700 the whole building was derelict.

A short circular walk along the cliffs to the south of Portpatrick to the ruins of Dunskey Castle and returning on a disused railway line. Good coastal scenery.

Terrain – Clear paths, steep steps near start, can be muddy in places.
